Along the border

Soldiers of the U.S. Army 3rd Battalion, 15th Infantry, perched on the last Kuwait

berm before the border Thursday, train their guns toward Iraq.

Early casualty?
Iraqi officials told reporters this girl was hurt in the first U.S. missile strikes on Baghdad Thursday morning.

Looking south
Kurdish soldiers in Chamchamal in Kurdish-controlled northern Iraq survey Iraqi army positions.
Iraqi soldiers in the area reportedly opened fire several times Thursday morning while U.S. cruise missiles and bombs were falling on Baghdad.

Gas alert
U.S. Army soldiers from the A Company 3rd Battalion 7th Infantry Regiment go to full chemical alert -- referred to as MOPP 4 -- in the Kuwaiti desert Thursday as Iraqi missiles were fired into Kuwait. U.S. officials told NBC News that two missiles were intercepted by Patriot batteries and one fell within a mile of U.S. troops but caused no injuries.

Waiting in Baghdad
Iraqi soldiers relax in Baghdad on Thursday after a broadcast by Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein that denounced the U.S. president as the "criminal little Bush."

Shelter from the storm

Sudanese refugees camp near the eastern Jordanian town of Al-Ruweishid on

Thursday, some 31 miles from the Jordanian-Iraqi border.

These people are the first of what is expected to be hundreds of thousands of

third-country nationals and Iraqis to flee into neighboring

countries during U.S. military action against Iraq.

First strike

'Target of opportunity'

A fireball illuminates the horizon after an explosion in Baghdad on Thursday. U.S. bombs and cruise

missiles hit Baghdad at dawn. Jets roared overhead, Iraqi anti-aircraft batteries opened fire, and air

raid sirens sounded about 90 minutes after a U.S. deadline expired.

'No outcome but victory'
President Bush in the Oval office of following his address to the nation Wednesday

night. Bush announced he had launched war against Iraq, promising a "broad and

concerted campaign" to disarm Baghdad and topple Saddam Hussein.

First word
Unidentified hockey fans watch President Bush's address on the big screen at Philips Arena in Atlanta on Wednesday, where the Dallas Stars beat the Atlanta Thrashers 5-4.

More to come

Ordnance handlers move a 2,000-pound bomb on the USS Constellation on Thursday in the Persian Gulf.

Ordnance assembly has tripled on the Constellation since President Bush's address, and Rear Adm. Barry

Costello, the commander of the carrier's battle group, said: "The massive air attack plan has not yet

commenced."

Winds of war
A large dust storm blows across Iraq and the northern end of the Arabian Peninsula on Wednesday. In this westward-looking satellite perspective, the dust cloud is the bright yellowish feature at the top of the image. The crescent-shaped Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman bisect the lower portion of the image.

The Pepsi generation?
Muslim school girls stand next to signs advertising the U.S.-made soft drink in Karachi, Pakistan, on March 20. Despite growing animosity among its citizens toward the United States over the war in Iraq, Pakistan's economy is hugely dependent on U.S. products.

Gridlock
A protest demonstration of 2,400 people shut down Wilshire Boulevard in Los Angeles on March 20. It was the second day in a row that the protest stalled traffic in the city.

Silent protest
An antiwar demonstrator blocks an entrance of the federal courthouse in Philadelphia in protest of U.S. military action in Iraq on March 20. Several protesters were detained by police.
