Cererea sau rugamintea de a ni.se spune ceva, de a face-sau a ni se face un serviciu, un anumit lucru etc. este de obicei formulata printr-o constructie interogativa introdusa de verbul "will...?". Ex.: "Will you teii me the time?" (Vreti/Binevoiti sa-mi spuneti ce ora este?), "Will he take this letter to the post office?" (Vrea el sa duca scrisoarea aceasta la posta?)

Expresii similare în continut în acest sens mai sunt: "Are you so kind as...?" (Sunteti asa de amabil sa...?) sau "Can/Could you...?" (Puteti sa/Ati putea sa...?). Ex: "Are you so kind as to lend me a hand?" (Sunteti asa de amabil sa-mi dati o mâna de ajutor?), "Can/Could you translate this text for me?" (îmi puteti/Mi-ai putea traduce acest text?) N.B. Politetea obliga ca astfel de cereri sau rugaminti sa fie completate de una din expresiile: "...please, ...if you please" (...va rog).

Constructiile prin care vrem sa exprimam o dorinta le introducem cu cuvintele: "I should like to..." (As dori/Mi-ar face*placere sa...). Ex.: "I should like to meet her." (As dori/Mi-ar face placere sa o cunosc.) sau: "We should like to take a walk." (Am dori/Ne-ar face placere sa ne plimbam). Obs. La forma interogativa, should este înlocuit cu would. Ex: "Would you like to meet her?" (Ati dori/V-ar face placere sa o cunoasteti?). "Would you like to take a walk?" (Ati dori/V-ar face placere sa va plimbati?).

Când solicitam îngaduinta sau permisiunea de a face ceva, putem face uz de unul din verbele may sau permit, ambele având aici întelesul de "a putea/a i se permite sa..." Ex.. "May I ask you a question?" (Pot/îmi permiteti sa va pun o întrebare?), "May we smoke here?" (Putem/Ne permiteti sa fumam aici?), "Permit me to help you" (Permiteti-mi sa va ajut) sau "Will you permit me to...?" (îmi permiteti sa...?).

Cuvintele de multumire pot fi exprimate - între altele - prin: "Thank you!" (Va multumesc!) sau "Thank you very much!" (Va multumesc foarte mult!) sau "Much obliged!" (Va sunt foarte îndatorat!) sau americanismul "I appreciate!" Obs. 1. - Pentru a conferi acestor expresii o nota mai oficiala, de la caz la caz putem adauga si: ...sir (domnule), ...Madam (doamna), ...Miss (domnisoara). Ex: "Thank you, sir!" (Va multumesc, domnule!)

Obs. 2 - Cuvintelor de multumire ce ni se adreseaza le putem raspunde cu una din expresiile: "Don't mention it", "You're welcome", "Not at all", "It's all right" corespunzând aproximativ expresiilor românesti: "N-aveti pentru ce!" si respectiv "Pentru putin!"

Obs. 3 - în cazul în care, în schimbul unui serviciu sau al unei atentii etc., interlocutorul presteaza un altul sau acorda corespunzator o indemnizatie, la "Thank you!" se raspunde tot prin "Thank you!" sau "Thank you too!" (si eu va multumesc!).

Daca nu întelegem sau nu auzim bine cuvintele rostite de interlocutorul nostru, spunem: "Pardon?" sau "I beg your pardon?" (Poftim? Va rog...?).

N.B. în stilul familiar putem folosi si interogatia "What...?" (Ce...? ), însa niciodata "Please?"*

Obs. l - Rugamintea de a se repeta cuvântul sau cuvintele pe care nu le-am înteles sau auzit o mentionam cu una din expresiile: "Please, repeat!" (Va rog, repetati!) sau: "Say it again, please!" (Spuneti înca o data, va rog!) sau: "I did not (quite) understand you!" (Nu v-am înteles (prea bine)!). Obs. 2 - Foarte frecvente sunt situatiile când în convorbire cu persoane purtând nume straine, de ex. vizitatori de peste hotare, nu putem deslusi ortografia numelui interlocutorului nostru. Pentru a-si spune numele "litera cu litera" ne vom adresa cu urmatoarele cuvinte: "Speli your name, please!" sau: "How do you speli your name?" (Va rog pronuntati numele dvs., litera cu litera). Acelasi verb (to speli) îl folosim si în cazul altor nume ca de ex. cu referire la tari, localitati etc. despre care nu stim cum se scriu în limba engleza. Ex.: "Speli it/this word,

Este însa frecvent folosit ca forma de politete obligatorie (Va rog), când cerem sau oferim ceva: "Let me have a look at your lighter, please." (Permiteti-mi, va rog, sa ma uit la bricheta dvs.), "Accept this... from me as a token of respect and gratitude, please." (Acceptati/Primiti, va rog, acest... din partea mea ca un semn de respect si recunostinta).

please!" (Pronuntati, va rog, litera cu litera acest cuvânt!).

Interjectia "Poftim!" cu întelesul "Ia(ta)/Ţine!", folosita când dam/înmânam ceva cuiva este redata prin "Here you are!".

Adresându-ne unei persoane (care nu ne vede), cu intentia de a-i atrage atentia asupra noastra, de ex. pe strada, unui trecator de la care vrem sa obtinem o informatie, într-un restaurant, ospatarului etc., vom spune: "Excuse me, please", "Pardon me, please" (Scuzati-ma, va rog) sau mai putin formal: "I say, please".

Traducerea expresiei românesti "Ce mai faceti?", cu referire la starea sanatatii sau dispozitia unei persoane, se face prin cuvintele: "How are you?" (niciodata prin: "How do you do?"). Aceeasi întrebare însa cu referire la terti se formuleaza corespunzator persoanei. Ex.: "How is/How's your father?" (Ce face/Cum se simte tatal dvs.?) sau: "How are they all at home? (Ce fac/Cum se simt membrii familiei/toti cei de acasa?).

Raspunsul variaza de la caz la caz: "I am fine thank you!" (Multumesc, foarte bine!) sau: "I am all right!" (Foarte bine!) sau: "I have never been happier!" (N-am fost niciodata mai fericit!) sau: "Just so and so!" (Asa si asa!) sau: "Pretty well, thank you!" (Destul de bine, multumesc!) sau: "Not very well!" (Nu asa de bine!).

Scuze, indiferent de natura motivului care ne obliga sa le prezentam, pot fi exprimate- între altele- cu urmatoarele fraze: "I (must) apologize for...!" (Trebuie sa ma scuz pentru...!), "Excuse me, please!" (Scuzati-ma, va rog!- mai ales când întrerupem pe cineva) sau: "I beg your pardon!" (Va rog sa ma scuzati!) sau: "I very much regret...!" (Regret foarte mult...!). Expresia cea mai elocventa prin care ne aratam parerea de rau pentru un neajuns pricinuit cuiva este "I am sorry!" sau "I am awfully sorry!" (Regret/îmi pare foarte rau!).

Acceptarea scuzei este de obicei formulata cu cuvintele: "It is all right!" (traducerea aproximativa: "Nu face nimic!") sau: "Don't bother!" (traducerea aproximativa: "Nu va necajiti/Nu-i nimic!).

Alte forme curente de exprimare a sentimentelor:

bucuria - "What a pleasure!" (Ce placere!) sau "I am glad to...!" (Sunt bucuros sa...!) sau "Nothing could make me happier!" (Nimic nu m-ar putea face mai fericit!). De asemenea: "Bravo!", "Well done!" (Bravo! Foarte bine!).

supararea, parerea de rau - "I am very angry!" (Sunt foarte

suparat!) sau "I am angry with you!" (Sunt foarte suparat pe tine/dumneata!), "I am sorry for you!" (îmi pare rau!), "I am much affected!" (Sunt foarte îndurerat!).

deznadejdea, încurcatura - "What shall I do?" (Ce sa fac?) sau "What can he done now?" (Ce se poate face acum?) sau "I am at a loss!" (Sunt în încurcatura!).

mânia, reprosul - "I am indignant!" (Sunt indignat!) sau "It is a scandalous thing!" (Este un lucru scandalos) sau "Shocking!" (Revoltator!) sau "What a shame!" (Ce pacat!) sau "For shame!" (Rusine!).

îndoiala - "What?!" (Ce?!) sau: "Really?" (într-adevar?) sau "Can it be so" (Sa fie asa?), "It is incredible!" (E de necrezut!), "Are you sure of it?" (Sunteti sigur de asta?).

mirarea - "I wonder...?" (Ma întreb...?).

pentru a întari o afirmatie - "Yes, of course!" (Da, desigur/fireste!) sau "Sure!", "Surely!"/"Doubtlessly" (Sigur, cu siguranta!).

pentru a întari o negatie - "No, certainly, not!" (Nu, cu siguranta, nu!) sau "No, it is not the case!" (Nu, nu este cazul!) sau "I did not say that..." (Eu nu am spus ca...) sau "Not in the least!" (Câtusi de putin!).

Obs. l - Când salutul este adresat unei persoane mai în vârsta, uneia careia îi datoram un anume respect, în expresiile de mai sus vom adauga - de la caz la caz -cuvintele..., Sir/Madam/Miss. Ex: Good morning, sir! - Good evening, Madam!

Obs. 2 - "Good moming!", la fel ca si în limba româna, se întrebuinteaza în primele ore ale diminetii pâna la ora prânzului.

Obs. 3 - "Good day!" este folosit rar, numai pentru încheierea unei conversatii (sau chiar întreruperea unei relatii).

Obs. 4 - "Good evening!" se spune o data cu înserarea, de obicei dupa ora cinci, ora "ceaiului" (Five o'clock tea).

Obs. 5 - "Good night!" se spune la ore târzii si anume când ne despartim de cineva.

Alte forme de salut specific englezesti mai sunt:

"Good afternoon!" se spune în intervalul dintre masa de prânz
si ora 5 p.m.

"Hello!" este o forma folosita între prieteni sau vechi
cunoscuti, corespunzatoare salutului românesc: "Salut! Noroc!"

Cu înteles aproximativ identic cu "Hello!" dar de o nuanta mai
putin intima, mai oficiala, este expresia specifica "How do you
do!" care poate fi întrebuintata la orice ora fata de persoane pe
care le respectam (echivalente: "Va salut!", "Sa traiti!", "Sarut
mâna! etc.). La ea se raspunde tot

prin salutul cu care am fost întâmpinati ("How do you do!").

Americanismul "Hi!" (Noroc!/ Buna!) este o forma mai familiara decât "Hello!"

Sinonime cu "Good-bye!" mai
sunt si expresiile: "So long!" si
"See you later!" (Amer.). Salutul
"See you tomorrow!" se traduce:
La revedere/Pe mâine. Abrevia-

De remarcat, totusi, faptul ca se spune Mr (Jphn) Patrick - nu Mr John, Miss (Eliza) Doolittle - fara restrictii, Professor (Henry) Higgins, sir Daniel (Jones)- nu sir Jones, Lady Vivian (Leigh) - nu Lady Leigh, Dr (Samuel) Johnson- nu Dr Samuel. Expresia "yourig lady" (tânara, domnisoara) sta întotdeauna singura. Ex.: "Will you introduce me to the young lady, I mean to Miss Patricia (Edward)?" (Vrei sa ma prezinti domnisoarei, vreau sa spun domnisoarei Patricia (Edward)?").

Obs. 2 - sir si Lady nu sunt urmate de nume decât daca persoana respectiva detine - cum este cazul în Anglia- un titlu de noblete. sir Winston - Lady Hamilton.

Obs. 3 - înaintea numelui mic al baietilor de "familie" catora nu li se spune înca Mister... (domnul...) se punea pe vremuri cuvântul Master... (echivalent cu românescul "domnisorul...") Ex.: Master Tom.

Obs. 4 - Gentleman si Madam nu sunt niciodata urmate de nume.

Obs. 5 - Adresându-ne unui grup de barbati si femei, vom spune: "Ladies^ and gentlemen", dar vom spune Mr and Mrs Cârtwright (nu Mrs and Mr Cartwright ca în limba româna) atunci când bunaoara ne referim la sot si sotie. Ex.: "Mr and Mrs Robinson have the pleasure of inviting you to..." (Domnul si doamna Robinson au placerea de a va invita la...)

Obs. 6 - Titlurile stiintifice ale intelectualilor, de noblete etc. nu sunt precedate de Mr sau Mrs. Ex.: "Good moming, professor! Have you seen doctor Bock?" (Buna dimineata, domnule profesor! L-ati vazut pe domnul doctor Bock?). N.B. Pentru a evita confuzii posibile, nota de intimitate, vom înlocui aceste titluri cu sir, Madam sau Lady, Miss. Ex.: "Good morning, sir! Have you seen Mr Bock, the doctor? How are you, Sir/Madam?"

English students. In England it is called soccer. American football and baseball are in much eater favour in the USA. I don't feel like going out
