Grammar Tip :

Use of a / an with nouns.

As you noticed in Chapter 1 with " I am a doctor." or " She is an architect." We use what are called articles in English for certain singular nouns.

The rule is if the noun begins with a vowel ( A,E,I,O,U ) we must use AN but if the noun begins with a consonant (all other letters) we

must use A.

Study these three lists.

an actress a dentist a big egg

an egg a bicycle a good day

an ice cream a car a nice hat

an orange a knife a pretty sister

an umbrella a teacher an intelligent student

an opera a mechanic an interesting movie

an apple a brother a handsome man

an earring a vacation a terrible mother-in-law

Now substitute into the following sentences :

He is _____ engineer It is ____ beautiful day. She has ____ niece.

Philip is ___ musician. Dorothy has ____ daughter. It is ____ expensive car.

Jim is ___ wonderful husband but Mary is ___ terrible wife.

Contractions :

do not don't

does not doesn't

I have I've

He has He's *

She has She's *

It has It's *

You have You've

We have We've

They have They've

Be careful not to confuse it is = it´s with it has = it´s

she is = she´s with she has = she´s

he is = he´s with he has = he´s

Conversation Practice Practice and then use your own information.
