1.0 Welcome

Thank you for installing Sonic Foundry Video Capture. This document contains information about installing and using Video Capture on your computer.

2.0 What's New

New Features in version 3.0

DV batch capture, batch print-to-tape, clip detection, and project recapture.

No more 4GB file size barrier: multiple clips are created on the fly when the Maximum DV clip size or operating system file size limit is reached. You can use multiple "chained" .avi files (rendered from Vegas) for print-to-tape operations.

Notable fixes/changes from version 3.0a

Dropped frames during capture (or recapture) will not change the length of the captured file.

Improvements in Vegas Media Pool updating.

Improvements in DV batch capture and recapture from Vegas.

Support for additional DV decks has been added.

Improvements in DV timecode reading resulting in more accurate dropped-frame counts.

Improvements in DV scene detection.

Fixed bugs for DV and analog out-of-space errors.

Notable fixes/changes in version 3.0b

Improved support for DV media converters when the Enable DV device control check box on the General Preferences tab is cleared.

Improved DV dropped frame count detection so that bad timecode will not incorrectly cause "phantom" dropped frames

A bug that caused DV 48 KHz audio to be detected as 32 KHz has been fixed.

3.0 Known Issues

To prevent dropped frames, do not use your computer for any other process while capturing or printing to tape. Ensure DMA is enabled for all hard drives/comtrollers.

Capturing to the same hard drive where your operating system is installed can result in dropped frames. If you have more than one drive, you can specify the target drive on the Disk Management tab of the Preferences dialog.

To prevent dropped frames, defragment the drive to which you will be capturing video.

OHCI-compliant IEEE-1394 DV capture cards are required for DV device control.

Even if device control does not work, you may still be able to capture video by manually controlling your video device (e.g. pressing play on your camcorder's remote and then clicking the Capture button in Video Capture). If you are having capture problems, try clearing the Enable DV device control check box in the Preferences dialog.

Not all analog capture cards are supported at this time. If you're using an analog card, please obtain the latest WDM (Windows Driver Model) or VFW (Video for Windows) drivers from your hardware manufacturer.

If your DV camera is connected to another IEEE-1394 device ("daisy-chained"), the bandwidth of the IEEE-1394 channel may not be sufficient for print-to-tape operations. Connect each device to its own IEEE-1394 port before using print-to-tape.

When using a digital-to-analog transcoder without a LANC adapter connected, clear the Enable DV device control check box on the General Preferences tab.

There are some issues with the hardware drivers on some Sony VAIO computers. There is a fix for this available in the Extras folder of the product CD.

If you experience audio and video synchronization problems when previewing from an analog device, choose Preview Audio from the Options menu to turn off audio preview. Use the Windows mixer to control the volume of the input to which your capture card's audio output is connected.

If you experience degraded system performance, clear the Enable still image capture check box on the Capture tab of the Preferences dialog or turn off the Display Square Pixels command on the View menu.

When the Allow full-screen file playback via Preview on Camera or Print to Tape check box is selected on the Capture tab of the Preferences dialog, the audio and video output is not sent to connected DV devices.

When the Allow full-screen file playback via Preview on Camera or Print to Tape check box is selected, you may have to play and stop previewing before the video preview is displayed in full-screen mode. Contact your hardware manufacturer for updated drivers, or-if you're using a Matrox DualHead display adapter, turn off dual-monitor support.

To prevent duplicated timecode from occurring on DV tapes, pre-stripe the tape by recording over the entire tape with the lens cap on, or ensure you start recording before the end of the previous scene.

If you're unable to preview an MJPEG-encoded file to an MJPEG external monitor, select the Close current device when in file playback mode check box on the General tab of the Preferences dialog.

If you experience unexpected rebooting and are using a debug version of the DirectX 8 runtime, please upgrade to the retail version of the DirectX 8 runtime.

Depending on your current time ruler format, you may see inconsistencies in the timecode values for clips that you captured. For NTSC, Video Capture uses SMPTE Drop timecode (29.97 fps). If you switch the time format in Vegas to use SMPTE Drop, Video Capture and Vegas will display the same timecode information. For PAL, Video Capture uses Time & Frames (25 fps); set the Vegas time format accordingly.

4.0 System Requirements

The following lists the minimum system requirements for using Sonic Foundry Video Capture:

400 MHz processor or higher

OHCI-compatible IEEE-1394 DV card (for DV capture and print-to-tape)

128MB RAM

Windows 98 SE, Windows ME, Windows 2000, or Windows XP

Internet Explorer 4 or later (IE 5 installer included on CD)

DirectX Media 8.0 or later (installer included on CD)

7200 RPM hard drive or faster

5.0 Installation

Video Capture is automatically installed when you install Vegas Video, so it is not necessary to run an additional utility to install Video Capture. The install utility, SETUP.EXE, located on the Vegas CD-ROM, creates any necessary folders and copies all files required by Vegas and Video Capture to your computer.

To install Sonic Foundry Vegas and Video Capture from the CD:

Place the CD-ROM in the drive. AutoPlay displays an installation menu.

Note: If you have disabled the CD-ROM AutoPlay feature, click the Start button and choose Run. Type D:\setup.exe, where D is the drive letter of your CD-ROM drive, and follow the on-screen prompts to complete the installation.

Click Install Vegas and follow the on-screen prompts.
