Inside BATTERY, the Virtual Drum Instrument (continued)

Real-Time Control

What fun is an instrument if you can't play it? Drummers don't a mouse, they use their hands. And with real-time control, so can 24524m1216y you.

You can trigger the drum sounds via keyboards, and of course, also from MIDI drum triggers such as the electronic drum sets made by numerous manufacturers. Some "groove boxes" have large, rubber pads that are good for generating MIDI notes to trigger the Battery sounds.

An even more interesting possibility is to add real-time modulation via MIDI. Page 8 in this seminar covers modulation and lists the various parameters that can be modulated, such as pitch, waveshaping, sample start, etc. Any of these parameters can also be modulated via MIDI. A maximum of 8 controllers are available for Battery, which can be set to any MIDI controller number from 0 to 122

Typical sources for MIDI controllers include keyboards with modulation wheels MIDI faders boxes like the Peavey PC1600 or similar models from Kenton and Doepfer. Some digital mixers, such as the Panasonic DA7, have MIDI layers that can be programmed to provide MIDI control.

The general procedure is simple:

  1. Click on options in the master module to bring up the Preferences box Fig. 1
  2. Referring to Fig. 1, in the lower left corner, each controller (A-H) has a pop-up menu where you can specify a controller number (in this screen shot, Battery Controller E is being assigned to MIDI controller 61).
  3. After making your assignments, choose the cell you want to control, and go to its Modulation module.
  4. Choose the parameter you want to control, the controller number that should be used to control the parameter, and the amount of control - done!
  5. Repeat the same basic procedure to assign other parameters to MIDI control.

Audio example 1 plays a drum part without any real-time control. In Audio example 2, a pitch wheel varies the closed hi-hat pitch, while the mod wheel controls the open hi-hat decay time. The second loop sounds much more interesting and "human" because of these variations.
